This volume presents and discusses seven model laws on drug treatment based on a review of State and local codes and statutes by a bipartisan commission composed of individuals with experience in law enforcement, drug treatment, and prevention.
Abstract
The legislation calls for the provision of a continuum of addiction treatment in health insurance and Medicaid, residential treatment programs for pregnant women and parents with dependent children, consumer protection requirements for managed care firms, training in medical schools, and addiction diagnosis and treatment as part of involvement in the criminal justice system. An overview summarizes research regarding the societal costs of addiction and the factors associated with treatment effectiveness. The text of each law is accompanied by a policy statement, highlights and commentary, and a reference list. List of commission members, staff members, speakers at hearings, and other organizations and individuals providing information to the commission.
