THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE FACILITIES AND TREATMENT APPROACHES OF A VOLUNTARY GOVERNMENT-SUPPORTED DRUG TREATMENT PROGRAM FOR HEROIN ADDICTS IN HONG KONG.
Abstract
THE SARDA (SOCIETY FOR THE AID AND REHABILITATION OF DRUG ADDICTS) IS AN ORGANIZATION WHICH PROVIDES TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION FACILITIES FOR THOSE WHO VOLUNTARILY APPLY FOR HELP. TREATMENT FACILITIES ARE LOCATED ON AN ISLAND SITUATED ABOUT 14 MILES FROM HONG KONG. NO UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS ARE ALLOWED ON THE ISLAND AND ACCESS CAN ONLY BE OBTAINED BY BOAT OR HELICOPTER. METHADONE TREATMENT IS USED TO ALLAY THE SYMPTOMS OF WITHDRAWAL. BY THE TENTH DAY OF TREATMENT MOST PATIENTS HAVE COMPLETED THEIR WITHDRAWAL. THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES THE REHABILITATION STAFF, AND LISTS THE WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS MOST COMMON TO THE PATIENTS. FINALLY, HE DISCUSSES SUCH PROBLEMS AS DRUG MISUSE BY PATIENTS, ATTEMPTS OF THE PATIENTS TO ESCAPE FROM TREATMENT, AND VIOLENCE AMONG PATIENTS. ...DMC
