This chapter seeks to provide an outline of recommended content for violence/aggression therapy, and to provide a review of the core approaches required for effective treatment.

Abstract

This chapter attempts to demonstrate the core content requirements required for aggression therapy, with a focus on information processing, emotional management, and relapse prevention. It highlights the integration between information processing and emotion, arguing strongly for the inclusion of both in aggression treatment programs. The chapter focuses on subjective emotion, usually anger, and tries to illustrate the importance of integrating relapse prevention into treatment. Relapse prevention becomes a core element within therapy. The problems with adopting a narrow approach to the development of violence and aggression therapy are demonstrated, with argument for a more individualized approach to treating aggression. Although information procession, emotional management, and relapse prevention are essential content, all of these areas have individuality as a core doctrine. Individuality cannot be lost in either the development or the delivery of treatment approaches for violence. Figures and references
