Abstract
Each chapter is devoted to one of five components: law enforcement, prosecution, courts, corrections, and juvenile justice. Each chapter includes three parts. An overview explains organization, statutory responsibilities, and how responsibilities are executed. The data section documents sources of information and data quality issues. The section on trends and issues presents statistical documentation of recent directions in criminal justice through 1986, and, in some cases, projects future trends. Among specific topics examined are offense and arrest patterns, violent crime, case dispositions, sentencing, probation, inmate characteristics, and prison overcrowding. Two major trends evident throughout the criminal justice system include the empowerment of crime victims and an emphasis on the apprehension and incarceration of serious and repeat offenders. A glossary and explanations of the projection methodology and for using the data are appended. Tables and figures.
