This article contains annual crime data submitted to the Illinois State Police during 1993-97 as part of the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting program.
Abstract
Between 1993 and 1997, the number of violent offenses declined 16.4 percent, compared to a 13-percent decline nationally. Murders declined 19 percent; criminal sexual assaults declined 14 percent; and aggravated assaults, the most frequently reported violent offense, declined 11.2 percent. The number of property offenses declined by 2.7 percent between 1993 and 1997. Robberies fell more than 25 percent, while the number of thefts increased by 2.1 percent. The total number of index crimes reported to the Illinois State Police decreased by slightly more than 5 percent from 1993 to 1997. Figures and table
