This report on trends in violent crime and crime prevention in Europe presents data on the incidence of reported crime in 1986 in the European and North American countries that provided data for a recent United Nations Survey and the results of the first international victimization survey.
Abstract
Violence, as well as crime in general, is an important concern in Europe but not all countries have the same problems nor is the risk of violence spread evenly within a country. The punitive approach remains the policy of choice of many people in Europe, but experience shows that no clear relationship exists between criminal justice resources and the problem of crime. The more successful initiatives in Europe have been those that combine the criminal justice approach and the social welfare approach with a more general social planning approach. These initiatives incorporate community policing, alcohol and drug policy, urban planning, and educational, social welfare, and employment measures. 14 footnotes and 3 tables
