This DVD provides a step-by-step explanation of the questionnaire developed by the National Center for Rural law Enforcement in order to assist tribal law enforcement agencies in a self-assessment of their current information technology, with a view toward developing and/or upgrading this technology.
Abstract
The objectives of the self-assessment, which is implemented through a questionnaire that can be downloaded from the specified Web site, are to determine the current baseline technical level, to plan for long-term technical goals, and to develop an informed approach for working with vendors in purchasing new technology. The DVD takes the viewer through the self-assessment process by using the self-assessment experience of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe Indians. Representatives of the tribal police discuss their needs as the narrator takes the DVD viewer through the self-assessment process. The first step in the self-assessment of the tribe's information technology is a hardware inventory that determines the baseline level of equipment currently available to the agency. The next step in the self-assessment is an inventory of existing information technology software, including security software and software licensing for information sharing. The third step in the self-assessment process is an assessment of networking resources, including the agency's objectives for networking. Other steps in the self-assessment focus on Internet usage, the status of an agency Web site, staff capabilities, disaster-recovery capabilities and policies, existing building characteristics, and long-term goals for the tribal justice information sharing system.
