REASONS FOR TRUANCY AMONG MALE HIGH SCHOOL AND INTERMEDIATE COLLEGE STUDENTS IN FARRUKHABAD, INDIA, ARE DISCUSSED, AND SUGGESTIONS FOR REDUCING TRUANCY ARE OFFERED.
Abstract
THE DISCUSSION IS BASED ON INTERVIEWS WITH AND OBSERVATIONS OF 100 TRUANT STUDENTS AGED 12 TO 24. THE YOUTHS' TRUANCY IS ATTRIBUTABLE TO A NUMBER OF FACTORS, INCLUDING LACK OF PROPER SUPERVISION BY PARENTS, LACK OF PLAYGROUNDS AND OTHER RECREATIONAL FACILITIES, PARENTS' ECONOMIC PROBLEMS, AND OVERCROWDED HOMES. OTHER FACTORS INCLUDE THE INADEQUATE FACILITIES AND UNDESIRABLE LOCATION OF SCHOOLS. MANY YOUTHS CUT CLASSES TO ATTEND MATINEE MOVIES OR ARE DISTRACTED BY GOINGS ON AT NEARBY BARS, RESTAURANTS, RAILWAY STATIONS, SHOPS, AND GIRLS' SCHOOLS. THE YOUTHS ALSO EXPRESSED A LIKING FOR 'LIGHT AND OBSCENE' LITERATURE, GAMBLING, AND OTHER SOCIAL EVILS. MANY COMPLAINED THAT THEIR COURSES WERE BORING. PARENTS ARE URGED TO SUPERVISE THEIR CHILDREN MORE CLOSELY, TO TRY TO PROVIDE RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES IN THE HOME, AND NOT TO GIVE THE YOUTHS SPENDING MONEY. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT SCHOOLS BE MOVED AWAY FROM THE CENTRAL CITY AND EQUIPPED WITH BETTER CLASSROOM AND RECREATIONAL FACILITIES. SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS ARE URGED TO PAY MORE ATTENTION TO STUDENTS' INTERESTS AND APTITUDES IN PLANNING COURSES. SUPPORTING DATA AND A LIST OF REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED. (LKM)
