INVESTIGATIVE STUDY OF THE MISSISSIPPI STATE PENITENTIARY TRUSTY SYSTEM, WHICH USES ARMED INMATE GUARDS TO MAINTAIN ORDER AND DISCIPLINE.
Abstract
THE HISTORICAL EMERGENCE OF THE PENAL PLANTATION IS DISCUSSED, ALONG WITH ITS IMPACT ON THE DEVELOPMENT AND OPERATION OF THE CONTEMPORARY PRISON SYSTEM. THE SELECTION OF INMATES FOR THE HIERARCHIC CUSTODY GRADES OF GUNMAN, HALF-TRUSTY, AND TRUSTY IS OUTLINED. TRUSTY CHARACTERISTICS, ATTITUDES AND RELATIONSHIPS WITH BOTH FELLOW INMATES AND STAFF ARE ANALYZED. EXPLORED ARE THE SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGICAL CHANGES EXPERIENCED BY INMATES AS A RESULT OF UPWARD STATUS MOBILITY. THESE INCLUDE INCREASED IDENTIFICATION WITH THE OFFICIAL SYSTEM AND ROLE CONFLICT. A NINE - PAGE REFERENCE LIST IS PROVIDED. THE PRISON QUESTIONNAIRE USED IN THIS STUDY IS INCLUDED IN THE APPENDIX.
