This presentation uses realistic vignettes to help students understand peer pressure as a motivating factor in why many teenagers become involved in drugs, to recognize when they are being manipulated, and to learn the art of saying 'no' and coping successfully with peer pressure.
Abstract
One vignette shows a student who is caught borrowing her mother's valium to attend a party for which the price of admission is drugs. The second section of the presentation presents samples of manipulative statements and gives ideas and techniques for students to use in acting in their own self-interest and saying 'no' without becoming belligerent and combative. Assertiveness techniques are used in role-playing situations to give teenagers experience in handling peer pressure. (Author abstract modified)
