The Office of Law Enforcement Technology Commercialization (OLETC) under the National Institute of Justice is working to identify, test, and evaluate new products designed and produced specifically for the corrections and law enforcement market.
Abstract
Some products are coming out of the private sector, but most of the advanced technologies have had their origins in defense or space programs. Some of the more important technology areas include concealed weapon scanners and explosives and narcotics detection. One concealed weapon scanner project of the OLETC has resulted in two prototypes, one installed in an Idaho courthouse and the other installed in a Federal court in Los Angeles. The OLETC is also working on a night vision device, equipment to detect both explosives and narcotics, improved handcuffs, a smart gun that can only be fired by the person who owns the weapon, and road spike devices to stop speeding cars and reduce high speed chases. Advanced technologies are being assessed by the OLETC with cost considerations in mind. 3 photographs
