Abstract
The data revealed that Hawaii’s violent crime rate has usually been less than half the national rate. The most recent peak in the violent crime rate in Hawaii occurred in 1995, whereas the United States rate has been declining since 1991. The property crime rate in Hawaii has remained higher than that in the United States throughout this period and was 22.9 percent higher in 1999. The Hawaii property crime rate has been declining since 1995; the United States property crime rate has been declining since 1991. Hawaii’s rates of burglary and motor vehicle theft have had mixed histories in their relationships to the respective national rates, while the rate of larceny-theft has generally been lower than the national rate. Hawaii’s arson rate has also generally been lower than the national rate. Figures and tables
