The report documents the progress and accomplishments of the restitution initiative during its first 2 years, including information on types of offenders and victims, amounts of restitution ordered and paid, rates of successful completion of restitution orders, and incidences of reoffending.
Abstract
The research indicates that restitution as a disposition is feasible in the sense that it accomplishes its immediate objectives: judges use it for serious offenders and as an alternative to other dispositions, and juveniles can perform as ordered and complete their restitution requirements. Inprogram reoffense rates averaged only 8 percent after 6 months and 14 percent after 1 year. It is significant that restitution was used extensively for serious offenders. Footnotes and data tables are included.
