This newsletter of the United Nations Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFEI) features a report on the proceedings of the 139th International Training Course on "Profiles and Effective Treatments of Serious and Violent Juvenile Offenders" and also reports on various other training seminars and courses that have been held with the support of UNAFEI.
Abstract
The 139th International Training Course was held May 19-27, 2008. Participants included corrections officers, police officers, judges, and other high-ranking public officials from Japan, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Africa. The course involved individual presentations; group workshop and plenary sessions; visits to relevant criminal justice agencies; and presentations by visiting experts, faculty members, and ad hoc lecturers. The course featured models of juvenile justice systems and methods of assessment and treatment. The course emphasized the United Nations rules and regulations for proper juvenile justice administration and treatment. The three group workshop sessions addressed issues and methods of criminal investigation, prosecution, and judicial procedures for serious and violent juveniles offenders; effective institutional treatment programs for serious and violent juvenile offenders; and effective community treatment programs for serious and violent juvenile offenders. A list of experts and participants is provided, along with the course agenda and reference materials. Brief information and participant lists are also provided for the following training courses: the Fourth Seminar on Criminal Justice for Central Asia; the Thirteenth Special Seminar for Senior Criminal Justice Officials of the People's Republic of China; and the Third Country Specific Training Course on Revitalizing the Volunteer Probation Aide Program for the Philippines. Information is provided on the Second Regional Seminar on Good Governance for Southeast Asian Countries (July 23-25, 2008 in Bangkok) and the 140th International Training Course (September 1-October 10, 2008).
