The tendency of terrorist groups over the past century to issue false or misleading claims of responsibility for their attacks often complicates the study of terrorism.
Abstract
This paper describes and classifies several patterns of false claims and attributions, practiced both by terrorist groups and, on occasion, by official agencies, in contemporary European terrorism. The author suggests that studies of terrorist movements need to employ more subtle and critical evaluation of claims of responsibility. 26 notes. (Author abstract modified)
