This report is a reference tool for providers in providing a better understanding of the relationship between adolescent trauma and substance abuse and treatment approaches.
Abstract
Although it is unclear exactly how many adolescents who abuse drugs or alcohol also have experienced trauma, numerous studies have documented a correlation between trauma exposure and substance abuse in adolescents. The result of these studies makes the importance of addressing co-occurring substance abuse and traumatic stress evident. However, ways of integrating these services are not easily identifiable or clear-cut. What is evident is that a coordinated approach between substance abuse providers and mental health providers offers the best hope of lasting recovery in adolescents struggling with the effects of traumatic stress and substance abuse. This toolkit was developed as a resource for those mental health providers and substance abuse providers, treating adolescents with co-occurring disorders. It offers providers general information about the links between trauma and substance abuse in adolescents, the prevalence of trauma exposure and substance abuse, information on treatment recommendations and evidence-based interventions, as well as integrated treatment strategies for both disorders, and strategies for enhancing adolescent engagement in treatment.
