VIEW THAT RATIONAL INQUIRY INTO THE RELATION BETWEEN THE DEATH PENALTY AND MURDER HAS DEMONSTRATED THAT CAPITAL PUNISHMENT IS IRRELEVANT TO THE HOMICIDE RATE.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR PROVIDES STATISTICALLY-BASED ARGUMENTS IN REFUTING THE VALUE OF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT AS A DETERRENT TO SERIOUS CRIMES, CHIEFLY HOMICIDE. HE VIEWS CAPITAL PUNISHMENT AS AN ACT OF 'IRRATIONAL VENGEANCE THAT IS NO BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL HOMICIDE TO WHICH IT ANSWERS IN KIND'. THIS THIRD EDITION IS A NON-UPDATED REPRINT OF THE 1966 (SECOND) EDITION.
