This videotape describes the products, organizational structure, and future plans of UNICOR, the Federal Prison Industries.
Abstract
A sketch of an Air Force sergeant's life between 7 and 8 a.m. illustrates the wide variety of products produced by UNICOR, from bedding and clothes to jet parts and office furniture. The video emphasizes UNICOR's quality control programs, customer satisfaction, training offered to prison inmates, and the state-of-the-art equipment used in its factories. The manufacturing processes and products of UNICOR's four divisions are shown: metal and wood products; textiles and leather; data/graphics; and electronics, plastics, and optics. Also discussed are the organizational structure from the national level to prison sites, sales figures, and marketing strategies. Because UNICOR's goal is to increase its sales 15 to 20% each year over the next 5 years and thus be able to employ more prisoners, the video focuses on special projects undertaken for agencies such as the Immigration and Naturalization Service and efforts of the Product Development and Research group.
