This manual describes the variables, coding, data collection, data processing, and file structure for the dataset on police deaths and assaults in 1981-82; the data were collected through the Uniform Crime Reports.
Abstract
Data were collected on felonious killings, accidental killings, and nonfatal assaults on law enforcement officers acting in the line of duty. Data covered assaults which resulted in serious injury or in which a weapon was used that could have caused serious injury or death. Other assaults not resulting in injury were included if they involved more than verbal abuse or minor resistance during an arrest. Details are also provided on the number and type of patrols and shift assignments, the number of injury and noninjury assaults by weapon type, and the types of situations involved. The 1981-82 files contain more than 33,000 cases.
