THIS STUDY COMPARED VARIABLES ASSOCIATED WITH AGGRAVATED ASSAULTS FOR TWO SAMPLE POPULATIONS: 241 ASSAULTS IN ST. LOUIS OCCURRING DURING 1961, AND 245 ASSAULT CASES IN MOMBASA OCCURRING DURING 1971.
Abstract
PATTERNS OF AGGRAVATED ASSAULTS WERE EXAMINED FOR SUCH VARIABLES AS TIME, AGE, SEX, WEAPON USED, PLACE OF OCCURRENCE, SITUATION, VICTIM-OFFENDER RELATIONSHIP, AND ALCOHOL INVOLVEMENT. HYPOTHESES REGARDING TYPICAL SITUATIONS, PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS, AND CHARACTERISTICS OF OFFENDERS AND VICTIMS ARE PRESENTED. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE PATTERN OF AGGRAVATED ASSAULT IN MOMBASA AND ST. LOUIS WERE VERY SIMILAR ON THE REPLICATED VARIABLES; THAT IS, THAT MOST CASES INVOLVED PRIOR VERBAL ARGUMENTS; THAT MOST OFFENSES OCCURRED ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHTS; THAT MOST INVOLVED YOUNG MALES; AND THAT VICTIMS AND OFFENDERS USUALLY KNEW EACH OTHER.
