This report provides an overview of recent efforts to promote the use and application of existing United Nations standards and norms related to crime prevention and criminal justice, pursuant to the Economic and Social Council resolution of July 1994.
Abstract
The report focuses on methods of facilitating the use and dissemination of these standards while improving cooperation and coordination of activities with other organizations active in this area. The standards, norms, guidelines, and model treaties in crime prevention and criminal justice represent internationally agreed-upon principles of desirable practice, which governments can use to assess their own systems, develop legislation, and engage in bilateral and multilateral cooperation to address national and transnational crime. The principles cover topics such as the handling of prisoners, police conduct, police use of force and firearms, victims' rights, the independence of the judiciary, and the administration of juvenile justice.
