THE JOB INVENTORY APPROACH TO PERSONNEL RECRUITMENT AND ADMINISTRATION, AS DEVELOPED IN THE COURSE OF THE AIR FORCE'S OCCUPATIONAL RESEARCH PROJECT, IS DISCUSSED ALONG APPLICATIONS OF JOB SURVEY INFORMATION.
Abstract
THE PROJECT WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1958 TO DEVELOP METHODOLOGIES IN A NUMBER OF PERSONNEL AREAS, INCLUDING JOB ANALYSIS (COLLECTION, ANALYSES, AND REPORTING OF INFORMATION DEFINING WORK PERFORMED BY PERSONNEL), JOB EVALUATION (FOR GRADE, PAY, AND SKILL LEVELS), JOB STRUCTURES (INCLUDING JOB ENGINEERING, WORK ORGANIZATION, AND OCCUPATIONAL CLASSIFICATION), JOB REQUIREMENTS (FOR APTITUDE, TRAINING EXPERIENCE, ETC.), CAREER DEVELOPMENT, PERSONNEL UTILIZATION, AND JOB SATISFACTION (IN PARTICULAR, AS IS IT RELATES TO SATISFACTION). THE FIRST PART OF THIS PAPER DESCRIBES HOW AND WHY THE AIR FORCE USES THE JOB INVENTORY APPROACH FOR COLLECTING, ANALYZING, AND REPORTING PERSONNEL-RELATED INFORMATION. THIS IS FOLLOWED BY A BRIEF DISCUSSION OF THE COMPREHENSIVE OCCUPATIONAL DATA COMPUTER PROGRAM SYSTEM (CODAP), A MAJOR PRODUCT OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT WHICH IS BEING USED BY ALL U.S. MILITARY SERVICES. FINALLY, THE LAST SECTION DESCRIBES APPLICATIONS OF JOB SURVEY INFORMATION TO PROBLEMS IN MANAGING THE APPLICATIONS OF JOB SURVEY INFORMATION TO PROBLEMS IN MANAGING THE PERSONNEL SYSTEM. THE APPLICATIONS SECTION IS RESTRICTED TO ONE STREAM OF RESEARCH WHICH COMBINES INFORMATION ON TASK AND JOB DIFFICULTY LEVELS WITH DATA DESCRIBING INDIVIDUAL JOBS.
