Abstract
The United States Penitentiary at Lewisburg is an all- male, high-security facility with a rated capacity of 1,041 and a current inmate population of 1,284. It follows a balanced philosophy, which recognizes that punishment, deterrence, and incapacitation are all valid purposes of confinement. Programs include work, education, training, and counseling. The Intensive Confinement Center at Lewisburg is a minimum- security facility with a current population of 151. It provides an intensive, highly structured environment that balances a military boot camp approach with the traditional correctional values of the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Inmates are placed in the program for 6 months. The Allenwood Federal Prison Camp is a minimum-security institution housing essentially nonviolent, short-term, first-time offenders. Its rated capacity is 535; the current population is 842. As of May 30, 1991, the Federal Bureau of Prisons had a rated capacity of 38,624 and housed 62,283 inmates. It had 19,544 staff members.
