A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF THE EXISTING COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION PROGRAMS IN CORRECTIONS IS PRESENTED TOGETHER WITH THE RESULTS OF ATTITUDE SURVEYS OF THE PUBLIC AND CORRECTIONAL STAFF ON COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT.
Abstract
THE MAJOR CITIZEN PARTICIPATION PROGRAMS DESCRIBED INVOLVED RECRUITMENT OF VOLUNTEERS TO WORK PERSONALLY WITH INMATES; RECRUITMENT OF EXPERT OR SPECIALLY SKILLED CITIZENS AND GROUPS TO HELP DEVELOP INMATE OPPORTUNITIES AND SERVE AS SOURCES OF KNOWLEDGE AND ASSISTANCE; TEMPORARY LEAVES FROM PRISON TO ALLOW INMATES TO PARTICIPATE IN COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS OUTSIDE THE PRISON; AND PUBLIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS. SPECIAL PROGRAMS ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. RESULTS OF A COMMUNITY STUDY UNDERTAKEN TO DETERMINE WHAT QUESTIONS, DOUBTS, OR FEARS THE COMMUNITY MIGHT HAVE REGARDING CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS ARE PRESENTED. ALSO REPORTED ARE THE RESULTS OF A STATE SURVEY ON CORRECTIONAL PERSONNEL'S ATTITUDES TOWARDS CITIZEN PARTICIPATION PROGRAMS. GENERAL CONCLUSIONS ARE PROVIDED ON THE RECRUITMENT AND TRAINING OF VOLUNTEERS; WOMEN VOLUNTEERS; INMATE INVOLVEMENT; AND IMPLICATIONS FOR PENITENTIARY SERVICE.
