THE UNIT COORDINATES THE REACTIVE AND PROACTIVE ACTIVITIES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA POLICE DEPARTMENT IN THE FIELD OF CRIME AND LOSS PREVENTION, TRAINS POLICE PERSONNEL IN CRIME PREVENTION, PREPARES AND IMPLEMENTS LONG-TERM AND SHORT-TERM PROGRAMS DEALING WITH PREVENTION OF CRIME AND LOSS OF PROPERTY, COORDINATES WITH THE UNIVERSITY'S ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY SERVICES TO AVOID CONFLICTS WITH THE FIRE AND SAFETY CODE, AND EVALUATES CRIME SCENES 'AFTER THE FACT' IN ORDER TO AVOID FUTURE SIMILAR HAPPENINGS. THE UNIT CONDUCTS SEVERAL SPECIAL CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAMS. THE UNIVERSITY SERVICE OFFICER PROGRAM USES UNIFORMED, NONSWORN PERSONNEL RECRUITED FROM THE STUDY BODY TO MAINTAIN COMMUNICATION WITH THE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND IMPROVE SECURITY IN THE CAMPUS LIBRARIES AND BOOK STORE. OPERATION IDENTIFICATION ASSISTS THOSE INTERESTED IN MARKING THEIR VALUABLES. AN ACCESS CONTROL AND ALARM SYSTEM PROVIDES SECURITY FOR SUCH SENSITIVE FACILITIES AS THE COMPUTER CENTER AND THE REGISTRAR'S OFFICE, THROUGH A COMPREHENSIVE, COMPUTERIZED ACCESS CONTROL SYSTEM. IN ADDITION, THE UNIT PROVIDES PROGRAMS DEALING WITH THE DISTRIBUTION OF EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS, THE ADMINISTRATION OF SECURITY SURVEYS, THE PRESENTATION OF LECTURES, THE APPLICATION OF STATISTICAL ANALYSIS, THE BUILDING OF MEDIA RELATIONS, AND THE COORDINATION OF THE UNIT WITH OTHER AGENCIES.
