This video emphasizes the high incidence of spouse abuse in Sao Paulo, Brazil and describes services offered by its Women's Police Station to female crime victims -- the first such police program in Latin American which is staffed entirely by women officers and other professionals.
Abstract
Since its creation in 1985, over 65,000 women have come to the Women's Police Station. Rosemary Corres, the unit's chief, profiles the women who come for help and describes the station's services. Women can file complaints against abusing spouses, consult social workers, or talk with women lawyers about their rights, divorce, and child custody. The Station also operates a preventive action program. The video depicts the work of the station's investigators, the self-defense training regime required for all staff, and liaison activities with women's groups. It emphasizes the Station's efforts to make men aware that spouse abuse is a crime, to promote women's self-esteem, and to influence legislation. The video concludes with comments from Brazil's Minister of Public Safety.
