The Canadian Criminal Justice Association (CCJA) held meetings in October 1996 to discuss developments and activities of interest to its membership.
Abstract
The CCJA approved the formation of a Standing Committee on Women's Issues, maintained prison privatization and aboriginal justice as two important priorities of the Policy Review Committee, expressed concern through the Committee on Community- Based Corrections that incarceration continues to be used excessively in Canada, and completed a Justice Directory of Services. The CCJA also focused on the unanticipated effects of media attention on pedophilia, prisons for children, the effectiveness of citizen advisory committees, the prison for women in Kingston, and inmate advocacy. A research summary provides firearm-related suicide statistics and research on suicide in general and suicide committed with firearms and discusses how firearms differ from other methods of attempting suicide, types of firearms used in suicide, and effects of Canadian gun control laws on suicide rates. 30 references
