The American Medical Association's (AMA's) Program to Improve Medical Care and Health Services in Correctional Institutions has succeeded in upgrading health care in participating jails.
Abstract
Begun in 1975, the program has improved health services in over 90 jails in 16 States across the country. In 1975, the AMA developed model health care delivery systems in a few selected jails. By the end of 1976, an interview of inmates in 30 pilot jails revealed that many jail inmates felt that their health had worsened since being incarcerated with the most common problem being access to health care. In 1978, the AMA added 94 jails in 10 more States to the project, and by 1979, 34 of these jails were accredited. Of the 26 originally accredited jails that were scheduled for reaccreditation in 1979, 21 were able to retain their status. Five references and one table are provided.
