This United Nations Compendium presents illustrations of urban crime prevention and at-risk youth strategies and practices from around the world.
Abstract
Strategies and practices in the area of urban crime prevention and at-risk youth are described in brief summaries that describe how the strategies and practices have been put into place. It is hoped that these descriptions will inspire other countries, cities, and communities to plan their own urban crime prevention and at-risk youth strategies. Also included in the report are examples of technical assistance and exchange of expertise that were integral to helping countries and localities develop their crime prevention programming capacity. Section 1 of the Compendium focuses on strategies and practices designed to reduce urban crime. Examples illustrate how city governments or local community organizations have successfully established and sustained effective crime prevention partnerships and structures that have reduced urban crime through various participatory approaches as well as through strategic urban development. Section 2 focuses on at-risk youth and the projects that target their needs. Examples illustrate strategies targeting homeless youth, children involved in violent youth gangs, and children victimized by human trafficking. A common thread woven through these successful programs is the participation of young people in the development and planning of these initiatives. Each description in sections 1 and 2 include the social context, the goals, outcomes, partners, and contact information. Section 3 provides listings of Web sites and resources from around the world describing good practice projects and crime prevention awards.
