This codebook explains the variables, coding system, and research methodology used to gather a set of data about the impact of judicial adjunct attorneys and referees on the court system at the county and State levels.
Abstract
The study was conducted in Pima County (Ariz.), Multnomah County (Oreg.), King County (Wash.), Hennepin County (Minn.), Phoenix, and Connecticut. The units of observation were civil trial cases; trial judges, including regular judges and adjunct attorneys; and litigating attorneys. The court case data include information on the type of case, the date of trial, the type of judge, the type of disposition, and the data of disposition. Information from the questionnaire data on judges, adjuncts, and litigating attorneys includes experience with the program, satisfaction, and ideas for changes. Sampling procedures varied by site.
