This paper reports on a comparison between photographic appearances of four bitemarks inflicted on living and dead persons to determine the usefulness of fluorescent versus full-spectrum visibility of bitemark pattern injuries.
Abstract
The crimes committed against these persons were under investigation through one part of California during July- October 1992. The injuries were photographed under normal (full-spectrum) lighting conditions and compared to photographs of the same bitemarks under 450 nm light. An Omniprint 1000 ALS unit manufactured by the Omnichrome Corporation was used. This unit is a portable, multiband- selection light generator originally designed for forensic investigation. Results revealed that the 450 nm alternate monochromatic light made an observable enhancement in the photographic appearance of a bitemark injury when compared to those taken under full-spectrum lighting conditions. Results support previous findings concerning the fluorescent properties of the human skin. Further research should focus on developing standardized parameters and techniques for optimum light source and filtration, together with the ideal photographic protocol. Photographs and 16 references
