This article describes a method of recreating lost dental restorations that will aid in the identification of remains.
Abstract
The author explains that a dental radiograph is an important tool in identifying recovered remains. However, in some cases, dental restorations are lost or missing, making the identification process much more difficult. This article demonstrates how lost dental restorations may be recreated using amalgam powder and calcium hydroxide. The author illustrates the recreation technique by using extracted teeth with an existing restoration. The tools needed include amalgam powder, calcium hydroxide pulp capping paste, missing pad, ballpoint applicator dental instrument, water, a fine-tipped paintbrush, dental explorer, dental carving instrument, and a standard dental x-ray machine. The author explains that all of these items may be found in any dental office. The technique employed is described with accompanying photographs to assist the reader. Also, a case study is offered to illustrate the usefulness of the technique. In conclusion, the author notes that this method is quick and simple and the materials used are readily available, inexpensive, and easily removed from the tooth once finished. 12 Figures, 6 references
