Abstract
This report from the United Nations (UN) Economic and Social Council describes progress by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in supporting the use and application of UN standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice. The standards and norms are a set of internationally recognized principles that are central to the work of the United Nations in the area of rule of law and human rights. The standards deal with issues in the following areas: principles relating to persons in custody, non-custodial sanctions, juvenile justice, and restorative justice; crime prevention and victim issues; and good governance, the independence of the judiciary, and the integrity of criminal justice personnel. Efforts by the UNODC include the development of handbooks, training curricula, and guidance notes to support technical assistance in various areas of crime prevention and criminal justice; providing sustained technical assistance to various regions around the world including countries in East Africa, West Africa, East Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, North Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe.
