This chapter describes the use of the Matrix-Predictive Uniform Law Enforcement Selection Evaluation (M-PULSE) Inventory in the selection of police personnel.
Abstract
The chapter examines the Matrix-Predictive Uniform Law Enforcement Selection Evaluation (M-PULSE) Inventory, a new test designed specifically for use in law enforcement selection. A brief overview is presented on the Federal laws that have been imposed on law enforcement agencies as regards the employment selection process, along with a discussion on the development of the M-PULSE Inventory. In the current version of the M-PULSE Inventory there are 455 items, about half of which involve issues related to the attitudes, values, and beliefs about the culture of law enforcement, police work, and police officers, while the other half deal with more generalized attitudinal issues. The Inventory consists of three scales, the Validity Scales, Liability Scales, Empirical Scales, and the California POST Psychological Screening Dimensions. A detailed discussion is provided on the makeup of the scales: 2 Validity Scales, 18 Liability Scales, and 4 Empirical Scales with 12 associated subscales.
