THERE ARE TWO MAIN KINDS OF SEPARATION FACILITY WHICH SOCIAL SERVICE DEPARTMENTS HAVE RESPONSIBILITY FOR.
Abstract
ONE IS THE SECURE UNIT WHICH CAN BE PART OF A COMMUNITY HOME COMPLEX OR PART OF AN ASSESSMENT CENTRE. THESE UNITS USUALLY COMPRISE OF A SUITE OF ROOMS AND ALLOW FOR COMFORTABLE NORMAL LIVING, AND EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES WITHIN A SECURE PERIPHERY. THEY HAVE HIGH STAFFING RATIOS. THE OTHER FORM OF SEPARATION FACILITY IS A SINGLE SEPARATION ROOM AND MOST FORMER REMAND HOMES HAVE THESE. IN THE DAYS OF REMAND HOMES THEY WERE USED AS A FORM OF PUNISHMENT. IT IS INTERESTING THAT EVEN SOME NEW ASSESSMENT CENTERS HAVE A SEPARATION ROOM. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
