By training DNA experts in various countries, the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center (UNTHSC) extends direct support to emerging scientists that is critical for the successful expansion of forensic DNA databases worldwide.
Abstract
A recent study by Gordon Thomas Honeywell estimates that by 2015, 60 percent of the world's population will live in countries that use DNA database legislation or policy. This projected rapid expansion of DNA databases throughout the world will create an immediate need for qualified, well-trained DNA analysts and database technologists. In 2011, Applied Biosystems granted the UNTHSC in Fort Worth, TX, a $3.5 million dollar gift to establish the Life Technologies Center for Forensic Excellence (LTCFE). This pioneering center is dedicated to providing an academic forensic DNA training certification program to scientists from around the world; and it is committed to assisting countries to achieve a rapid implementation of their DNA database programs. The program is designed to reduce significantly the time required for forensic DNA database laboratory start-up, accreditation, and operational efficiency. This program will significantly enhance the ability of individuals to process DNA samples. Through this unique certificate program, technicians, analysts, and laboratory directors will learn all aspects of single-source DNA sample processing, including fundamental scientific knowledge, laboratory procedures, automation, data analysis, and data review. The LTCFE facility is composed of both an operational laboratory and a training laboratory. The certification program features an eight-credit, 4-week program; hands-on bench training with cutting-edge technologies; comprehensive forensic genetics lecture series; the latest QA/QC procedures and ISO fundamentals; validated work flows and protocols to facilitate accreditation; expert guidance from world-renowned faculty; and access to state-of-the art laboratories used for single-source reference sample analysis. 1 figure and 2 references
