Abstract
This document, developed by the American Correctional Association, presents information for corrections administrators on using administrative segregation to manage offenders. This information includes the different types of administrative segregation status for offenders, criteria for placement of offenders in long-term administrative segregation, the types of data analysis that should be conducted before using administrative segregation, the various forms of segregation reviews that should be conducted, and ways to manage the segregation population. The document highlights programs and services that segregated offenders are allowed to participate in, such as adult basic education, alcohol and drug treatment programs, and pre-release programs. The document also describes the step-down program wherein a designated section within a segregation housing unit is used for offenders participating in educational and instructional programs. Information is also provided on the fiscal impacts of establishing segregation units and the benefits from having these types of units within a correctional facility. Tables
