This article discusses using the Internet to disseminate crime information.
Abstract
Since 1989 the Crime Analysis Unit (CAU) of the Tempe, Arizona, Police Department has prepared and distributed reports on crime statistics, calls for police service, maps that shade the city according to types of crime and calls for service, and other general information. The CAU decided that posting the information on the Internet would conserve time and resources by reducing mailings and virtually eliminating printing and duplicating costs. The CAU determined who wanted information: new residents, community groups, community managers, media, students, and crime analysts and department personnel. They were interested in the safety of a particular area of the city, activity in a particular neighborhood and how it compares to other areas of the city, crime patterns or other public safety issues, information related to crime analysis and historical information for long-term problem- solving.
