This Utah Domestic Violence Annual Report presents data and information on the incidence and consequences of domestic violence and the services provided to victims.
Abstract
The report indicates that domestic violence is one of the fastest growing and most serious violent crimes in Utah. It encompasses all races, ethnic groups, educational levels, social and economic classes, sexual orientations, religions, and physical and mental abilities. It involves a systematic pattern of physical, sexual, verbal, emotional, and psychological abuse and predominantly involves women as victims. Utah's response to domestic violence is a multidisciplinary approach coordinated by the Utah State Domestic Violence Cabinet Council. The Council's strategy is to facilitate action at the local level through grassroots agencies. The Utah Domestic Violence Council supports 23 local coalitions or coordinating councils on domestic violence, involving every county in the State. Prevention and intervention services include 16 shelter programs and 40 domestic violence victim advocate programs, along with 59 licensed domestic violence treatment providers across the State. This report includes data and information on child abuse related to domestic violence, protective orders, criminal stalking, national female homicide rates, Utah domestic violence related deaths, Utah intimate partner homicides, and the Utah domestic violence information line. Data on domestic violence are presented from the Utah Crime Victimization Survey, an emergency department survey on domestic violence, and an analysis of domestic violence incident-based reporting. National statistics on domestic violence are also presented. Extensive tabular and graphic data and appended domestic violence services for 2003, Utah demographics, and a list of domestic-violence Web sites
