TWO ABBREVIATED VERSIONS OF AN INTELLIGENCE TEST ARE COMPARED WITH THE STANDARD VERSION OF THE TEST ON THE BASIS OF THE SCORES OF 126 YOUNG ADULT MALE INMATES (63 BLACKS AND 63 WHITES) IN A FEDERAL PRISON.
Abstract
FOUR STATISCICAL TESTS ARE PERFORMED TO COMPARE IQ (INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENT) SCORES OBTAINED WITH TWO SELECTED-ITEM VERSIONS OF THE WECHSLER ADULT INTELLIGENCE SCALE (WAIS)--THE PAUKER VERSION AND THE SATZ-MOGEL VERSION--WITH SCORES OBTAINED WITH THE STANDARD WAIS. THE COMPARISON, WHICH IS EXPRESSED IN TECHNICAL, STATISTICALLY ORIENTED LANGUAGE, INDICATES THAT CORRECTIONAL CLINICIANS WHO WISH TO USE A WAIS SHORT FORM PROBABLY SHOULD CHOOSE THE PAUKER VERSION. THE PAUKER VERSION WAS SUPERIOR OR EQUAL TO THE SATZ-MOGEL VERSION ON 16 OF 18 POINTS OF COMPARISON FOR BLACK SUBJECTS AND ON 14 OF 19 FOR WHITES. IT IS EMPHASIZED THAT THE FINDINGS SHOULD NOT BE GENERALIZED TO OTHER AGE GROUPS OR RACES OR TO WOMEN UNTIL THEY ARE CROSS-VALIDATED IN OTHER SAMPLES. SUPPORTING DATA AND A LIST OF REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED. (LKM)
