COMPARISON OF RELATIVE FREQUENCY OF INVOLVEMENT IN DELINQUENCY AS REPORTED BY THE THREE RACIAL GROUPS WITH OFFICIAL DELINQUENCY RATES.
Abstract
THERE IS A GREAT DISCREPANCY BETWEEN ACTUAL (SELFREPORTED) DELINQUENCY RATES AND THOSE REPORTED BY COURTS AND SCHOOLS. OFFICIAL RATES ARE HIGHER THAN ACTUAL RATES FOR NEGROES, AND LOWER THAN ACTUAL RATES FOR JAPANESE. THE AUTHOR FEELS THAT THIS IS PARTLY EXPLAINED BY BIAS OF OFFICIAL AGENCIES, VISIBILITY OF PARTICULAR OFFENSES, AND DEMEANOR OF THE YOUTH WHEN CONFRONTED WITH ADULT AUTHORITY.
