The primary purpose of this "white-paper" is to improve the readers' understanding of the corrections domain and the value of the vast amount of related information available.
Abstract
For the purpose of this paper, "corrections" is defined as "any agency responsible for justice- involved individuals, whether in the institution or the community." In explaining the overall value of corrections information, five issues are addressed. First, it discusses why the reader should be interested in accessing corrections informational resources. Second, it identifies the stakeholders and individuals who will benefit from corrections information. Third, it profiles the characteristics and schedules for major events that facilitate corrections information exchanges. Fourth, it identifies and discusses the specific elements of corrections information often requested for information-sharing. Fifth, the paper discusses how corrections information can be shared; identifying both the major corrections information sources as well as major national initiatives that support the further exchange of corrections information. In proposing recommendations, the paper notes that funding, cultural differences, bureaucracy, and technology continue to be major obstacles to corrections information sharing. A major recommendation is the creation of the technological capability that will enable real-time corrections information to be shared with the broader justice and public safety community with provision for feedback to the corrections domain.
