This report describes the implementation and impact of the Vancouver Robbery Information Program (RIP) in which the Vancouver, Canada, police conducted seminars for convenience store owners and employees that covered modifying the environment to discourage robbery and coping with actual robberies.
Abstract
Following an overview of the extent and nature of robbery in Canada and the United States, the report reviews the Southland Corporation's successful robbery prevention program initiated in its 7-Eleven stores and how this model was adopted by the Vancouver Police. Data collected from police records and store interviews demonstrate the seriousness of robberies among convenience stores relative to other forms of robbery in Vancouver and reveal characteristics common to robbed stores. A comparison between program participants and nonparticipants shows that participants expressed more awareness of robbery prevention techniques, but most did not comply with the RIP seminar's suggestions. RIP participants, however, had noticeably lower losses when robbed than did nonparticipants. Recommendations for the future operation of the RIP conclude the report. Charts, approximately 40 references, and program materials.
