REVIEW OF CURRENT LITERATURE ON VANDALISM, INVESTIGATION INTO THE NATURE OF RAILROAD VANDALISM, AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH.
Abstract
THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS REPORT WERE TO REVIEW AND SUMMARIZE THE CURRENT LITERATURE ON VANDALISM, TO MAKE A PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION INTO THE NATURE OF RAILROAD VANDALISM, AND TO RECOMMEND RESEARCH AREAS FOR FUTURE CONSIDERATION. THE STUDY INCLUDES AN EXTENSIVE LITERATURE SURVEY, A SUMMARY OF RESPONSES TO A QUESTIONNAIRE SENT TO MEMBERS OF THE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN RAILROADS, AND AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ON VANDALISM. THE AUTHOR'S CONCLUSIONS INDICATE THAT THE ACT OF VANDALISM IS NOT A SENSELESS ACT, BUT CAN BE UNDERSTOOD AS ARISING FROM A VARIETY OF MOTIVATIONS. SEVERAL CLASSIFICATION SCHEMES REFLECTING THIS VIEW ARE REVIEWED AND DISCUSSED, WITH THE GENERAL IMPLICATION THAT A PARTICULAR PREVENTION OR CONTROL PROGRAM MAY BE APPROPRIATE FOR ONE TYPE OF VANDALISM, BUT INAPPROPRIATE FOR ANOTHER. THEREFORE A VARIETY OF APPROACHES MUST BE INTSITUTED TO DEAL WITH THE MULTI-FACETED NATURE OF THE PROBLEM. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED). (SNI ABSTRACT)
