THIS SERIES OF FILMSTRIPS WITH CASSETTE TAPES EXPOSES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS TO THE MEANINGFUL REASONS CERTAIN BEHAVIORS SUCH AS LYING, VANDALISM, OR CHEATING ARE UNACCEPTABLE TO SOCIETY.
Abstract
THESE BEHAVIORS MAY INVOLVE INCIDENTS THAT SEEM MINOR--CUTTING IN FRONT OF PEOPLE IN A LINE, 'BORROWING' A TOY WITH THE INTENT TO RETURN IT AFTER THE OWNER HAS REFUSED PERMISSION TO BORROW, LYING TO FRIENDS WHEN ONE DOESN'T WANT TO ACCOMPANY THEM SOMEWHERE, DAMAGING LIBRARY BOOKS, BLAMING AN ACCIDENT ON ANOTHER--BUT ARE SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE THEY HURT OTHER PEOPLE, CAUSE OTHER PEOPLE FINANCIAL OR EMOTIONAL DISTRESS, OR BECAUSE THEY MUST BE RESOLVED USING TAXPAYERS' MONEY. THE SERIES DISCUSSES THE CONSEQUENCES OF CERTAIN ACTIONS, STRESSING THAT POSSIBLE PUNISHMENT IS NOT THE ONLY OR THE MOST IMPORTANT CONSEQUENCE. CHILDREN IN THE FILMSTRIPS DISCUSS PERTINENT INCIDENTS THAT HAPPEN IN EVERYDAY LIFE WITH TEACHERS, PARENTS, AND OTHER FRIENDS AND DISCOVER THAT IF ONE EXPECTS CERTAIN RIGHTS IN SOCIETY--FREEDOM FROM THE DANGER OF PROPERTY THEFT, PEACE AND QUIET IN PUBLIC THEATRES, CONSIDERATIONS FROM OTHER PERSONS--THEY MUST BE WILLING TO GRANT THE SAME RIGHTS TO OTHERS. THE FOUR FILMS ARE CATEGORIZED ACCORDING TO THESE TOPICS: LYING AND CHEATING, HURTING PEOPLE'S FEELINGS, DESTROYING PROPERTY, AND STEALING AND SHOPLIFTING. A TEACHER'S GUIDE IS PROVIDED. (DAG)
