Abstract
WHILE GETTING SOME EXTRA HELP WITH MATH HOMEWORK, A STUDENT ENTERS A DISCUSSION WITH HER TEACHER ABOUT STEALING. THEY TALK ABOUT SEVERAL INCIDENTS THAT HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD INVOLVING STEALING OF LUNCH TICKETS, STEALING TO REPLACE SOMETHING STOLEN, STEALING CITY OR TOWN PROPERTY LIKE TRAFFIC SIGNS, AND SHOPLIFTING OF SMALL ARTICLES. THE FILMSTRIP SET EMPHASIZES THAT ALTHOUGH MANY OF THESE BEHAVIORS SEEM SUPERFICIALLY MINOR, THEY ARE SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE THEY DEPRIVE SOMEONE OF PROPERTY AND CAN CAUSE SUFFERING, MUST BE REPLACED AT THE VICTIM'S OR PUBLIC'S EXPENSE. FURTHER, STEALING OF SMALL THINGS AND SHOPLIFTING ARE INCIDENTS WHICH MULTIPLY INTO LARGE LOSSES OF MONEY. CHILDREN ARE INSTRUCTED THAT THERE ARE MANY CONSEQUENCES OF STEALING BESIDES PUNISHMENT WHEN CAUGHT--THERE ARE THE FEELINGS OF SHAME AND GUILT AND THE HARM DONE THE VICTIM. (DAG)
