ANALYSIS OF SUBJECT RESPONSES AND PHYSICAL REACTIONS TO PRE-TEST QUESTIONS BY LIE DETECTOR EXAMINERS.
Abstract
THE ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE PRE-TEST INTERVIEW OF SUBJECTS CONDUCTED BY POLYGRAPH OPERATORS. BEHAVIORAL CHARACTERISTICS DURING THESE INTERVIEWS WERE DIVIDED INTO THREE CATEGORIES- ELICITED VERBAL (ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS), SPONTANEOUS VERBAL (COMMENTS, REMARKS, OR COMPLAINTS), AND NONVERBAL (MANNERISMS, FACIAL EXPRESSIONS), AND CLASSIFIED AS THOSE CHARACTERISTIC OF A TRUTHFUL OR LYING SUBJECT. TO SUPPORT HIS CLASSIFICATION OF THESE CHARACTERISTICS, THE AUTHOR COLLECTED DATA FROM 100 REPORTS OF INTERVIEWS SELECTED AT RANDOM FROM THE FILES OF A NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED POLYGRAPH-TESTING AGENCY. HE PRESENTS STATISTICAL DATA TO SUPPORT HIS CONCLUSION THAT BOTH THE VERBAL AND NONVERBAL BEHAVIOR OF TRUTHFUL POLYGRAPH SUBJECTS DIFFERS IN SIGNIFICANT OBSERVABLE RESPECTS FROM THAT OF LYING SUBJECTS, AND THEREFORE BEHAVIORAL DATA CAN BE A SOURCE OF USEFUL INFORMATION IN THE ULTIMATE DIAGNOSIS OF TRUTH AND DECEPTION.
