Six articles report on the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime (NCAVC), its four major programs, and the services it provides law enforcement agencies.
Abstract
An article traces the creation and development of NCAVC, which became operational in June 1985. NCAV collects and analyzes violent crime data and assists police agencies in identifying, locating, apprehending, and prosecuting those responsible for violent crimes. The four major NCAVC programs are research and development, training, profiling and consultation, and the Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (VICAP). An article on research and development summarizes NCAVC's current research and projects future research. Another article describes NCAVC's process of profiling unknown perpetrators of violent crime based on evidence available. The article describing VICAP notes that it is a nationwide information center which collects, collates, and analyzes specific violent crimes. An article profiles NCAVC's training of law enforcement officers in the application of behavioral science techniques to the investigation of violent crimes. The concluding article is an overview of the ongoing research and development pertaining to NCAVC's automation of the criminal personality profiling process. Article footnotes.
