This is an overview of the laws and rules applicable to crime victims and witnesses.
Abstract
The book is intended to help victim-witness coordinators and advocates, Assistant United States Attorneys, and other United States Attorneys' office professionals who work with victims and witnesses. The handbook is predominantly organized chronologically, with substantive information and related statutes grouped together where logical. Each chapter begins with a summary of the statutes relevant to the chapter, followed by selected case summaries where the statutes were applied, and the actual text of the statutes. The chapters concern: (1) Definition of Victim; (2) Attorney General Guidelines; (3) Victim Witness Protection Act of 1982; (4) Victims of Crime Act of 1984; (5) Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 32 and Victim Impact Statements and Allocution; (6) Criminal Control Act of 1990 and The Victims' Rights Clarification Act of 1997; (7) Violence Against Women Act of 1994; (8) Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996; (9) Child Victims and Witnesses; and (10) Restitution.
