This compilation of materials provides guidance for Michigan law enforcement officers who deliver death notifications and contains information on a self-help program designed for parents of murdered children and other survivors of homicide victims.
Abstract
The Michigan Sheriffs' Association has developed an inservice training program to help law enforcement officers become proficient in the delivery of death notifications and in how to deal with the feelings and emotions of those receiving the message. The 8-hour program is designed to teach participants what it is like to be the recipient of a death notification. Participants include State, county, and local law enforcement officers, as well as prosecuting attorneys, victim assistance program coordinators, judges, mental health and crisis center workers, hospital emergency room staff, clergy, and school counselors. The self-help program for survivors of homicide victims covers grief and bereavement, the importance of emotional support, and some of the problems survivors experience.
